Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know what label width my printer accepts?
Check your printer's spec sheet, manual, or manufacturer's website for "maximum print width" or "maximum media width." Most desktop thermal printers fall into one of two categories: 4" wide (the most common, fits most Zebra ZD-series, GK420, TSC TTP-Series, Datamax E-Class) or 2.25" wide (compact desktops like Brother QL-Series, Zebra ZD220 narrow). If you're not sure, contact us with your printer model and we'll confirm.
What's the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer?
Direct thermal printers use heat to create the image directly on heat-sensitive label paper — no ribbon required. Thermal transfer printers use a ribbon that melts onto the label surface, requiring both ribbon and label stock. Ecotherm sells direct thermal labels only. Direct thermal images typically last 6–12 months, which is more than sufficient for shipping, FBA, barcode, and most identification labels.
Will any 1" core direct thermal label fit my printer?
Almost — but two things still need to match: (1) the label width must fit your printer's maximum print width, and (2) your printer must support gap sensing or black mark sensing as appropriate for the label format. The vast majority of desktop thermal printers use 1" core rolls with gap sensing, which is what we stock for our standard 4" wide and 2.25" wide categories. Mobile printers typically use 0.75" core rolls with black mark sensing.
What's the difference between ZD420 and ZD420t?
The Zebra ZD420 is a direct thermal printer (no ribbon). The ZD420t is a thermal transfer printer (uses ribbon plus labels). Our direct thermal labels work in the ZD420 (direct thermal) but NOT in the ZD420t when used in thermal transfer mode. If your model number ends in "t," verify whether you have it set up for direct thermal or thermal transfer printing before ordering.
Do you sell ribbons or thermal transfer labels?
No. We currently sell direct thermal labels only — your printer creates the image directly on the heat-sensitive label without a ribbon. We do not sell ribbons or thermal transfer label stock.
Can I get samples before ordering?
Yes. Email sales@ecothermlabels.com with your shipping address and the sizes you'd like to evaluate. Samples are free for legitimate business inquiries and typically ship within 1–2 business days. We strongly recommend testing samples with your printer and barcode scanner before committing to a bulk order.
